Overhaul!

midwest capacity blog

Sorting through all the “stuff” I’ve collected over the years is time-consuming — hence the lack of action or new listings on etsy as of late. By next month more of my time will be dedicated to sewing, beading, painting and simply producing — fingers crossed. If I’m learning anything through this process, it’s 1) the art of the destash, as books and supplies will likely be the newest of my esty listings 2) V8 and Splash make passably palatable stand-ins for sit-down meals and 3) one can never have too many sketchbooks on hand, but websites may be a different matter (and are a bit trickier to ‘destash’…). Speaking of websites, if you’re the painterly sort and want your fill of head-tilting discourse check out http://mwcapacity.wordpress.com/. It’s rather refreshing.

It’s all about the process…?

Why, exactly, is this belt worth $18,000?

Leather tanned for over a year apparently plays a part. The New York Magazine article fills in on the rest of the details, beating out the Marie Claire snippet on the Ballet flats that cost $538 but well under the $7,300 alligator bag…

Spirit and Place

This is kinda cool to know: Spirit & Place has posted an open call for collaborative events. The theme this year is ‘Exploring Imagination’. There’s three informational sessions and a collaboration workshop on January 25 from 9am to Noon (The English Building, 600 North Alabama St.). Two- (or Three-) Wheeled Vehicular Fashion! Complete with heels!

velocouture
a photo from the vélocoture flickr group: posted by zakkaliciousness

Despite being bleery-eyed and a crumpled untimely mass I had to check out what Hap is doing with the site over at the Dada site (I like, I like!) and note this would be his/their first-go-round with the great WP (pretty sure about that). Anyway, it inspired me to make a post about an article/video on quick, easy alterations (here’s the pdf) to easily update a wardrobe. On both sites (wha?). That, with the new-found Vélocouture flickr group — well, we know what to expect for the slew of blouses and button-down shirts that are cluttering the closet… and if heels are an option… well!

Somebody’s asking where the *^@# are those links

md100.jpgprefab.jpg

Yeah. I’m on that. Tonight. I promise. So they’ll be ready first thing… oh. It’s tomorrow morning already. OK. In a few hours. After a quick nap.

In the meantime, I have to express that I was just blown away by the 1) structures on 2) the site design of 3) the speed of www.modulardwellings.com. I thought MD100 looked familiar — in the way people I went to school with recognize me (for the record I’ve usually not got the foggiest idea of who they are). But as soon as I saw the link to Readymade I knew…

FYI: Elevating takes on new meaning

It upscaled the macaroni and cheese without seeming to be some pretentious-fusion denial about what we were really eating.

Apparently it’s fine to try this with food (maybe) but polyester placemats — that’s a no-no.

Let’s learn a new term: Craftivism!

for dawns boys

The day after Christmas I read an etsy forum post about Louisiana artist Dawn Habisreitinger. I felt for her two young boys. Knowing she had managed, in some way, to support herself through her art as well as rebuild a home and life after Katrina — well, it’s not even close to the fairy-tale ending anyone, let alone an artist, envisions.

Then a few days ago I saw a Storque article. It served as a glimmer of hope that it’s not all is lost, and that we can do more than wallow under a grey cloud thinking about it: Etsians are tagging items ‘For Dawns Boys‘ so that proceeds from the eventual sale of these items will go to help the boys. Not the same as having their mom back. But let’s hope that letting them know there’s a group of people around the world, some who knew her and many like me who didn’t, are thinking of them will help in some small way.

Search for “Dawns Boys” on Etsy and you’ll see all the items listed.
