Silent auction, less than silent nights

This week saw LOTS of sewing (such a good thing!) in preparation — for the American Cancer Society Fashion-A-Cure silent auction — along with the first santa sighting of the summer season!

The orange/white/vintage floral fabric clutch, along with a “multimedia” scarf (as Murph, one of this year’s organizers, calls them) done up just for the occasion, was donated to the American Cancer Society Fashion-A-Cure silent auction. Really wanted to meet the winning bidder , but waiting out the extremely long line of bidders among so many people just wasn’t feasible. Hopefully she will contact me though!

These didn’t make it into the auction, but I’m working up new pouchettes (using the term ‘clutch’ just seems irresponsible) and scarves featuring watercolors I’ve been doing, along with drawings my friend John has been doing. Soon, very soon!

As for santa — he’s hot of the presses! Just got printed, and even has a cameo in a refer box on A1! I tried to stay away from the obvious, but it was the path of least resistance — especially on a Friday night, when the designer needs it by Monday morning! Poor illustration got lost in the shuffle, somewhere’s between flash the the two other illos…

Nonetheless, it gets the point across. I should be saving up any and all turkey-related ideas anyway — the annual “dress the turkey” contest will be upon us soon, and there’s no telling what I’ll have to do for that…

So… now, the flash is ‘done’ (in web terms, where there’s the opportunity to tweek up some print() or throw in a conditional statement or two, ‘done’ doesn’t mean much)…

it’s amazing what layers can do (so many, many, many, many photoshop layers)…

…and this one (well, the ‘get’er done’ version with a far more comically cartoonish client, anyway) made it by just a hair…

Invited artists spent Saturday, August 2nd creating artwork at the Zoo. A framed piece from each artist will be on display and available for sale at through a silent auction. Here’s the link to the lowdown on the sketch-ups!

There’s nothing like an on/off toggle switch for a map that would otherwise be covered in layer upon layer of google-esque pushpins. Coding has consumed a good part of the day — and will do likewise tomorrow (calling xml files and video! whee!!) but i did manage to knock out a bit of beading. Unfortunately it’s much easier to write it than show it at the moment. The day will come when the sets are completed, and photographed, made up all nice and pretty. Most include pieces of the epoxied wood mini-prints that are nice and simple but use some wild color and bead combinations. If only the ipod touch had a camera — or I really had an iphone, like a certain social networking site likes to announce (in error) that I have (not!). It would make mobile blogging so much nicer…

Granted I did manage to do something crafty today (deftly wielding a pair of scissors to convert a tiny tiny hoodie into a nice little asymetrical cardigan that was paired with a carved orange chinese-ish pendant just in time for work)… but tonight it’s all about scripting. Specifically: coding a gigantic monstrosity of a map — that has been printed every year for the past 3 or 4 years — so it’s interactive. I get to translate it into some flash goodness people will/may/should/are going to be told to use (fun fun?) in a week or so — and give it a fresh twist (taboule, anyone?). What it needs to include is simple enough: buildings, restrooms, main stage areas, food, shuttle and video. Designing it so it’s intuitive, usable and not frustrating to navigate (or code!) is a whoooole nother thing. In the meantime, there’s the doubletruck print map to consider, too. So tonight — it’s just all about coding. Tomorrow — the world?!

Illustration Friday

Since ICON i’ve been trying to blog and complete illustration friday illustrations (somewhat) consistently. So far one has been completed, but I’m having trouble justifying a 17-minute photoshop job as a completed illustration. Guess I have until next thursday to tweek it to fit this week’s theme, ‘canned.’ Then explaining why the image fits the bill won’t be necessary — if it’s not already obvious already!

lost access = increased productivity?

After losing both telephone and cable (in the great race to update and accommodate digital television service) I’m now patiently waiting for reconnection. And by patiently I mean occasionally detailing the events leading to what will be the 7-day drought of hi-speed connectivity.

And since I’m relying on the happen-chance trips to random wireless hotspots and a temperature-sensitive ipod touch for web access, it’s left me more time for non-digital projects and activities (like working on that fabulous travel bag and recreating skirts). We have until Wednesday, then get to review the results…
